You must hold a valid and current pilot medical certificate to pilot any powered aircraft except when exercising sport pilot privileges.

Common Questions about the Pilot Medical Exam

Note: The information provided on the FlightPhysical.com is designed to support, not replace, the relationship that exists between a pilot and his/her Aeromedical Examiner. Many of the FAA medical standards are eligible for waiver consideration and all must be interpreted by the physician before a fitness for flight recommendation is transmitted to the FAA.

Who is required to hold a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Medical Certificate? Any person acting as pilot-in-command or other required crewmember of an aircraft (except for free balloons, gliders, and ultralights) must hold a current and appropriate medical certificate. This includes student pilots in solo flight as well as private, commercial, and airline pilots.
